IMO's Pizza

Celebrate 314 Day in the Lou

Across the country, people refer to March 14th as Pi Day, but it’s better known as 314 Day in St. Louis! Since 314 is our area code, it only makes sense that we celebrate our wonderful city. Admittedly, this year is going to be a little lackluster in comparison to years past because we are one year into a pandemic. However, that won’t stop local restaurants from dishing out the best food St. Louis has to offer! Take a look at some of the ways you can satisfy your hunger for St. Louis pride.

Let’s Eat!

St. Louis has its own unique culture of cuisine. We all know that the waffle cone was invented here at the 1904 World’s Fair, but here are some other meals you might want to make on 314 Day:

St. Louis Style Pizza

IMO's Pizza

You thought you knew pizza, but you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen St. Louis style pizza! Thin crust pizza topped with Provel cheese – yes, that’s Provel cheese, which is a mix of cheddar, swiss, and provolone. You can find this in a number of popular STL pizza joints including the ever popular IMO’s.

Toasted Ravioli

Toasted ravs are everything! St. Louis takes ravioli up a notch by breading and frying the meaty pasta and serving it with a side of marinara sauce.

Pork Steaks

Why do other parts of the country give this delicacy a dumb name like “Boston Butt?” Pork steaks are thin cut (but the best are on the thicker side) pork shoulder that are a staple of every St. Louis BBQ. You know we’re a cut above!

Slinger

If you had one too many Buds the night before, the Slinger will be calling your name in the morning! Get a plate of cheese, breakfast potatoes, eggs, and meat (usually sausage, hamburger, bacon, or ham) under a pile of chili. Always served with either toast or hash browns!

St. Paul Sandwich

If you often find yourself torn between Chinese and a sandwich shop, then do we have the combo for you! The St. Paul Sandwich consists of an egg foo yong patty with mayo and LTP on white bread. Look out for variations that include gravy, chicken, beef, or shrimp!

Frozen Custard

No, it’s NOT ice cream! It’s frozen custard! The smooth, creamy frozen treat is always in demand in STL. The real question is: sundae or concrete? The real answer is: BOTH!

Gooey Butter Cake

Gooey Butter Cake Park Avenue CoffeeOkay, stop drooling. This dessert is a staple of St. Louis and a variation of a coffee cake with a gooey, buttery center and crispy edges. There are a million variations on the flavors, and you might even see gooey butter cake make an appearance in other desserts like milkshakes!

If you’re thinking of cooking a St. Louis-inspired dish, Schnucks has created a recipe list for this very occasion!

314 Day Specials

Red alert! Red alert! A number of St. Louis restaurants are having specials, including a few restaurants that will be selling items for $3.14! Check out a full list here.

Mission Taco – Toasted Ravioli Taco

We know, we couldn’t believe it either. Mission Taco is releasing their soon-to-be-classic Toasted Ravioli Taco to celebrate 314 Day! Their Facebook page described this taco as “a Parmesan-crusted crispy corn tortilla with an Italian-seasoned meat filling, Mom’s marinara sauce, shredded Provel cheese and topped with parsley and Parmesan cheese.” And, yes, THIS is going to be $3.14 and only available on March 14th!

Hi-Pointe Drive-In – St. Lunatic Burger

It’s baaaaack! Sprint over to Hi-Pointe Drive-In for your chance to get a St. Lunatic Burger! Okay, so they take a burger, right? Of course, it’s a Provel cheese burger. But then, this burger is also topped with a pork steak, toasted ravs, and sprinkled with Red Hot Riplets. THEN, instead of a bun, the burger is sandwiched between two slices of St. Louis style pizza. This is the best thing to be built in St. Louis since The Arch!

If you’re planning on celebrating 314 Day in St. Louis, consider supporting another local business – St. Louis County & Yellow Taxi. We can give you a ride to all of the best spots to satisfy your STL craving!

VICC Program Supports STL

GradThere is no question that the past 15 months have created challenges in everyone’s lives. These constantly shifting challenges have created numerous obstacles to success. Despite these hurdles, thousands of St. Louis area students will be graduating over the next few weeks to embark on new adventures. We want to take a moment to recognize those who have persevered through these challenges and are preparing to celebrate the momentous occasion of high school graduation. Congratulations to all of the graduating seniors in the St. Louis area – specifically, the 329 graduating seniors who have participated in the VICC program.

For almost 40 years, St. Louis County & Yellow Taxi Company has worked closely with the Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation (VICC) to provide safe and reliable transportation to kids participating in the school choice programs. Since 1981, the VICC program has supported the educational goals of more than 80,000 students. For the team at VICC, these aren’t just numbers – they are people…the kiddos.

Beyond Education

When the pandemic forced schools to shut down in March 2020, the team at VICC switched gears to find other ways to support students with not just their educations, but their lives as well. VICC helped supply Chromebooks, hot spots, school supplies, and meals to kids learning remotely. Between March and July, VICC delivered 1,800 meals each week. As students began to return toClassroom school in August, VICC continued to deliver more than 500 meals and weekend food backpacks. That’s more than 50,000 meals! VICC recognized that the success of a student depends on the support they receive. Tami Webb, Operations Manager of VICC Transportation, says: “What these kids have accomplished during this crazy year is utterly remarkable!  It truly takes a village and everyone at VICC is glad to be part of that village.” We are incredibly proud to work so closely with an organization that helps students achieve success in all aspects of life.

Through all of the adversity created by the pandemic, the 329 graduating seniors in the VICC program are a testament to the program and the support of everyone involved. The parents, teachers, coaches, administrators, facilities and food service teams, bus and taxi drivers, and the outstanding team at VICC have helped to create an environment where these graduating seniors could thrive. But it has been the dedication and hard work of these kiddos that have allowed them to accomplish this truly remarkable feat! Great job, and best wishes for a bright future!!

Summer in St. Louis

Things are finally getting back to…um, “normal?” Thanks to the vaccine rollout, St. Louis is starting to open back up. Obviously, this summer is not going to look like the summer of, say, 2019, but it also won’t look like the summer of 2020. Finally, we can take the time to start enjoying this awesome city again! Summertime means baseball, river rides, and awesome parks — among everything else St. Louis has to offer! Take a look at some of the summer activities taking place this season.

Adventure & Sports

Do you have a lot of energy after being cooped up for a year and a half? You’re in luck! There are so many adventures you can go on in the St. Louis area. Stadiums are opening up again at higher capacities, meaning we can finally watch the Cardinals in action!

Nature

Missouri is quite beautiful! For a while, parks were the only socially-distanced activity around. That’s still super fun, but there is more variety now. Go wild at the zoo or maybe go shopping at a local farmer’s market.

Classic Attractions

These are some year-round favorites for local St. Louisans! The pandemic definitely made it more difficult to visit these staples of the Lou. Now that things are opening back up, it’s time to get back to our roots!
If you need a ride anywhere, consider booking a taxi with us by giving us a call at 314.991.5300, booking online, or using our free app!

You can listen to live music, play some trivia, eat some of their famous wing sauce, or even order a plate of shark chunks (but maybe don’t tell the shark conservationists). For those who would rather eat LIKE a shark, there’s always Shark & Deli. St. Louis Sports

STL loves sports! Whether we’re bleeding blue or going to baseball heaven, St. Louis adores their major league sports. However, we are also home to a number of minor league sports teams, too. For obvious reasons, most of these teams have not had the chance to play in at least a year. Now that they’re announcing their return, it’s time to support your local teams!

Meet Our Minor League Sports Teams

Cheer on your local minor league teams to fill in the gaps for the major league sports we’re lacking. There’s a sense of community that comes with following a minor league team that just can’t be beat!

St. Louis Ambush – Major Arena Soccer League

Arena soccer has several key differences from outdoor soccer (aside from the obvious indoor/outdoor aspect). For instance, players can use the walls for rebounds, passes, and crosses. An experience like indoor soccer is exhilarating and action-packed! This November, you can cheer on the St. Louis Ambush at the Family Arena once again!

Gateway Grizzlies – Minor League Baseball

Even though you’d have to cross the river to get to the stadium, the Gateway Grizzlies are only 15 minutes from the Cardinals! If you’re looking for a different kind of ballpark experience, go check out a minor league team. You usually get to sit closer to the field for a way more affordable price. Minor league baseball is a great family environment because they typically aren’t as crowded and provide amenities for children like the Kid’s Zone. The Grizzlies also have a lot of fun theme nights as well! Here’s the thing, though: you have to at least go for the food. The Grizzlies’ ballpark is home to “Baseball’s Best Burger.” That’s not conjecture, that’s the burger’s name! It’s a bacon cheeseburger sandwiched between a Krispe Kreme donut! So bring your appetite and the whole family to a minor league baseball game!

St. Louis Surge – Global Women’s Basketball Association

We have been without an NBA team for decades in St. Louis, but we are currently home to a GWBA team! The St. Louis Surge is a women’s basketball team that calls Mabee Gymnasium at Fontbonne University its home court. Bring basketball back to the community by supporting your local teams. The 2021 season is about to wrap up, but there’s still time to support them!

St. Louis Slam – Women’s Football Alliance

The NFL is kind of a touchy subject in STL since, well…the move. We’re still pretty upset. However, the WFA is here to give you your football fix — and during the off-season! With a season going from April – July, St. Louis Slam gives you the opportunity to watch football almost year-round. Check out our four-time WFA National Champs in action when they return next year!

Sports Teams Coming to STL

STL SC Construction -STL Sports
To see more images, visit the St. Louis CITY SC social media: @stlCITYsc (all social handles).

St. Louis is attracting more sports teams. Unfortunately, the pandemic halted a lot of progress in getting these teams to St. Louis. That being said, 2023 promises to be the boom in sports that St. Louis deserves!

St. Louis CITY SC – Major League Soccer

Local soccer fans couldn’t be happier to see St. Louis finally joining the MLS! You might have seen the construction downtown from highway 64 (40). The stadium is expected to be completed next year, and the St. Louis CITY SC will officially debut in 2023. Soccer will be in STL before we know it!

Battlehawks – XFL

Okay, so the Battlehawks were JUST here, but their 2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic. St. Louis was so close to having another season of football in The Dome, but we only had 2 games to enjoy before parting ways once more. Not all hope is lost, though, because the XFL is scheduled to return in 2023, and the Battlehawks will most-likely find their battle nest back in St. Louis!

St. Louis County & Yellow Taxi encourages you to be safe and ride local! Sporting events often pair well with beer, so make sure you have a ride home. Order a cab using our app, online booking, or calling us at (314) 991-5300.

Taxis Through Time

Back when gas was only $0.19 a gallon, we began a legacy that would shape the St. Louis taxi industry for decades to come. Since 1935, we have grown our fleet, established ourselves as a leader in the taxi industry, and maintained our traditions and values. By keeping the business in the family, our integrity and has remained unmatched. Since the beginning, this business has provided a family-like atmosphere that extends to every single person involved. St. Louis is our home, and we always strive to do our best to represent the community and provide excellent, reliable service.

Taking Taxis To The StreetsOlder Taxi

In 1935, Thomas M. Gregerson founded County Cab with a fleet of only 3 taxis. Despite being a smaller cab company, we were quickly able to grow our fleet. Throughout our history, County Cab has evolved and led through technical innovation.  In 1946, we were the first taxi company in the Midwest to install two-way radios in all of our cabs.  These radios could both receive AND transmit radio waves, meaning the taxi drivers could respond to the dispatchers quicker, and vice versa. As a result, drivers were made aware of fares in record time, and they could confirm with dispatch that they were on the way.

At this point, it had become quite clear that we were thriving in the taxi industry. Mr. Gregerson was determined to establish County Cab as the most innovative cab company around. We were the first taxi company in St. Louis to use multiple voice channels to dispatch cabs, and later on, computer dispatching. With all of these advancements, how could anyone keep up with us? Our communication was improving, and so was our fleet. More and more of the taxis on the road were painted with our signature red and white!

The Family Legacy Continues

When it was time for Thomas M. Gregerson to step down, he transferred ownership of County Cab to his son, Tom J. Gregerson in 1998. Tom, who enjoyed judging horse shows, was a hard worker with a competitive edge. This, combined with his leadership skills and knowledge of the taxi industry is what brought Tom to carry on the family legacy. During the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the world experienced a technological boom. As a result, customers were expecting more of a digital experience. We weren’t about to stop innovating. So, in 1999, our dispatchers began utilizing GPS tracking to identify the taxi closest to the customer. Nearby taxi drivers would be dispatched almost instantly, and passengers wouldn’t have to wait as long for a ride.

BBB Torch AwardCommitment to Customer Service

Thanks to our smooth transition into the digital age, we were able to merge with Yellow Cab, growing our fleet once again. Now that we had the capacity to handle more trips, we focused on improving the customer experience. Smart phones were becoming more prevalent amongst our passengers. In 2010, we became one of the first taxi companies in the US to launch a mobile app. Our customers were able to order a cab, track it, and pay for their ride all within the app! We knew we owed it to the St. Louis community to adapt with the times and make taxis more accessible to everyone. It’s how we have always done business. Since we had established ourselves as pioneers in the taxi market, the Better Business Bureau honored us with the Torch Award for exceptional ethics and service in 2014. It was a privilege to be recognized as a dependable form of transportation.

Taxi TraditionsTaxis at the Ferris Wheel

Traditions are important to us! We always trick-or-treat ourselves around Halloween. Team members LOVE to dress up in hilarious costumes, trying their best to out-do each other with the wackiest ideas. Team members bake desserts for everyone and, you could expect some of Basil’s “famous” chili that definitely wasn’t a store-bought mix! (Wink!  Wink!)  If you can’t tell, we like to party, and we like to eat!

Mardi Gras

Being a St. Louis company, we LOVE Mardi Gras! Every year, Soulard puts one of the biggest Mardi Gras events in the US. Whether you are going to Taste of Soulard, the pet parade or the annual Grand Parade, we have partnered with Mardi Gras, Inc. for nearly 15 years to provide safe transportation to and from the grand parade and all other Mardi Gras events.  You could say that we definitely let the good times roll!

St. Louis County & Yellow Taxi Today

As of 2017, ownership of St. Louis County & Yellow Taxi was transferred to Thomas M. Gregerson’s granddaughters, Kim J. Dolniak and Debbie Rudawsky. Continuing the family legacy, Kim and Debbie maintained the same values held by their father and grandfather before them. From sorting cab vouchers at the kitchen table to working in dispatch after school, the two sisters were always embedded at County Cab. Despite growing up alongside a male-dominated industry, Kim and Debbie were well equipped to take over the reins when their father retired. Our dispatching technology may have changed, but our drive to succeed has stayed the same. It’s in our blood! St. Louis County and Yellow Taxi still goes the EXTRA MILE for our customers, team, and the St. Louis community.

Kim and Debbie PGA

Supporting the Community

We have partnered with the Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Commission (VICC) and most of the local school districts to provide safe and reliable school transportation to kids for more than 40 years. We have teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater St. Louis to drive awareness for the disease through a 24-hour cab ride. “The Longest Ride” takes place on June 21st, the longest day of the year. We also offer transportation for large parties so people can enjoy their night without having to find a sober driver or wait alone for a rideshare driver to arrive.

In 2018, we were honored to be the only taxi company of choice for the 100th PGA Championship. That year, Brooks Koepka was the winner, finishing just two strokes ahead of Tiger Woods. Koepka set a PGA Championship record with his 72-hole total of 264, and St. Louis was there to witness it! Our taxis were lined up at the official lot for the championship, providing hundreds of spectators with rides.

Whether it is providing safe transportation to major events in St. Louis, parties for our corporate and individual customers or just being there when you need us, we have a long history of commitment to the transportation needs of St. Louis.

Still Going StrongDriver on Donut Day

In spite of the pandemic that began in 2020, we have pressed on. Things may look a little different now, but we have not forgotten our roots. Safety has always been our top priority, which is why we installed safety partitions to slow the spread of germs. Also, our drivers wear masks in their vehicles, and our garage was equipped with a fogger to sanitize the interior of our cabs. Local businesses really took a hit during the pandemic, so we wanted to do our part to help build up the community. And, since we still love to find any excuse to party, we have visited local businesses to celebrate silly holidays. Namely, we visited Mattingly’s for National Pizza Party Day, and we stopped by Tony’s Donuts for National Donut Day! Even being socially distanced, we have still found ways to get closer to our community.

We’d like to thank St. Louis for all of the support we have received. It’s clear that we have all come a long way since 1935! We love St. Louis and we are honored to be part of the fabric of this community for more than 85 years! We look forward to the many great years to come!

Halloween Safety

Halloween

Spooky season is upon us! It’s time for carving pumpkins, picking costumes, and trick-or-treating. However, it’s not always pumpkin spice and everything nice. As we gear up for this hauntingly fun holiday, it’s important to review some safety tips to lift your spirits during this time of year. So sit for a spell and take a look at our tricks and treats for Halloween safety.

Pumpkin Carving Safety

Now this is pumpkin to talk about! Avoid injuries while carving your Jack-o-‘Lanterns by designating an adult to do the carving. The kids can help by scooping out the pumpkin seeds and picking the stencil. Yeah, that might not sound as fun, but neither does a trip to the ER. Let’s remember that adults aren’t invincible either. Use a dull blade when carving. Better yet, consider using a pumpkin carving kit since it’s specifically designed for this activity. If you use a knife that’s too sharp, it could cut through too well and injure your hand on the other side. When it’s time to illuminate your creation, it’s best to use a battery-powered tealight to avoid burns.

Costume SafetyTrick or Treating

Come as you aren’t! Halloween costumes allow kids to be creative and express themselves in such a fun way. When it comes to children’s costumes, make sure they are comfortable, breathable, and flame retardant. Most importantly, make sure the kids are wearing something that can be seen from the road. This could be a glow bracelet/necklace, or a flashlight. Some local organizations have safety events that could provide you with reflective or glowing items. So make sure to keep calm and carry a (glow) wand! If your kid is known to wonder, consider writing your name/number in your children’s costumes in case they get lost and need help.

Trick-or-Treating Safety

Creep it real this Halloween and give your kids clear instructions for trick-or-treating. Make sure your trick-or-treaters look both ways before crossing the street and always walk (not run) to other houses. Stay ahead of the carve and explain that drivers may ignore the crosswalks, so children must stop and check for cars there too. If it’s available, it’s always a gourd idea to use a sidewalk. For those trick-or-treating on their own, make sure they have a route that they will stick with and a designated time to come home/check in.

Vehicle Safety

Streets on Halloween are always busy with all of those tiny trick-or-treaters out and about. On top of that, everyone is walking around in the dark. This is why it’s so important to minimize your distractions if you drive on Halloween night. Put your phone down, don’t put on parts of your costume that might obstruct your view or impact mobility, and make sure you’re taking corners slow. Then there’s the partying and the “boos.” Sure, ghouls just want to have fun, but we urge everyone to NOT drive while under the influence on any day, especially Halloween. If you know you’re going to eat, drink, and be scary, consider taking a taxi instead of getting behind the wheel. Even if you would rather assign a trusted friend to be your DD, carpooling means fewer vehicles on the road, reducing the risk of an accident.

Let’s get this party startled! If you anticipate that you will need a ride this year, download our app to make sure you can easily book a ride.

Thanksgiving Tips

It’s almost turkey time! While some may be excited about the upcoming feast, others may be stressing out — mostly those that are doing the holiday shopping. Since there is so much that goes into the meal, there is also a lot that goes into the shopping. This year, major grocery chains like Dierbergs, Costco, Target, and Walmart will be closed on Thanksgiving, so it’s extra important to plan ahead. You can BAKE the best of this season by using this post to get organized. Feast your eyes on our tips for being the holiday hero!

The Best (and Worst) Time to Grocery Shop

ThanksgivingFirst of all, let’s identify the days that are the busiest: the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Most people would expect the day before turkey day to be the busiest, but that Tuesday is just as busy. All of the “Oops! I forgot the…” thoughts start popping into people’s heads, and they try to rush to the grocery store on Tuesday to avoid the Wednesday crowd. Unfortunately, the stores are busy, and the shelves are bare — especially if you go after work. Some suggest going that Wednesday morning or later in the night when fewer shoppers are present. On the other hand, others suggest finishing up your grocery shopping by the Monday before Thanksgiving to avoid the stress all together. If you’re able to get really organized, you can even make dishes in advance and freeze them!

Check out this Make-Ahead Thanksgiving feast from the Food Network!

Stores Closed on Thanksgiving

  • Dierbergs
  • Costco
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Schnucks
  • United Provisions
  • City Greens Market
  • Aldi

Stores Open on Thanksgiving

  • Fields Foods
  • Whole Foods (closes early)
  • Save-A-Lot
  • CVS

Tips to Save Money on Your Grocery Bill

BASTE on past Thanksgivings, you might already have an idea on how to save some money. That being said, sometimes we get caught up in tradition and don’t think about some alternate shopping habits. Here’s a quick list on ways you can save money while grocery shopping:

  • Buy generic
  • Avoid buying ingredients for just one dish
  • Make a list
  • Check off items on your list as you shop
  • Consider buying a turkey breast instead of a whole bird
  • More tips here!

Keep in mind that it’s NOT a faux pas to ask people to bring their own dishes to Thanksgiving dinner! Typically, people are willing to help, and they’re excited to bring something they like. By doing this, you will save time AND money. Additionally, it reduces the amount of dishes you utilize. There is no reason to go out and buy more dishes to accommodate a group when they can bring their own. Easy as pie!

Bonus Tip: Ask everyone to bring their own plastic storage containers to take home leftovers without risking losing your own.

Tips for Thawing a Turkey

Butterball Hotline

Some people are able to find a fresh turkey for Thanksgiving dinner a day or so before the meal, but that’s not very common. Frozen turkeys are often the way to go. According to Butterball, there are a few things to keep in mind while thawing a turkey. Make sure you move your turkey to the fridge 1 day per 4 lbs of turkey. The turkey should be cooked within 4 days after being thawed. However, don’t ruffle your feathers if you forgot. The tur-key to a successful Thanksgiving is to not panic! You can always use the cold water method which requires more attention than the fridge method. Simply place the bird in cold water and change it every 30 minutes. Make sure the turkey is still in its wrapper and is completely submerged. For every pound, thaw it in the water for about 30 minutes.

For more how-to information, check out Butterball, or call the Butterball hotline. We swear this isn’t sponsored, we just really wanted to add this GIF!

Tips don’t get any butter than this! Enjoy your holiday, and stay safe. If you have family coming in, you’re traveling yourself, or need assistance grocery shopping, call County & Yellow Taxi!
