Oh No – I left the water running in my pool!!

With our relentless winter behind us and warmer temperatures now a certainty, we begin to think about all the wonderful things we can do outside.  Biking, fishing, gardening, home improvements and enjoying all the wonderful attractions that St. Louis has to offer like the rental boats in Forest Park. There is just something about warmer weather that makes us all have a little extra pep in our step.

This time of year is also the start of “let’s open the pool” season.  After staring out your window all winter at the sad covered pool that is just speaking to you and begging for sunny weather, now is the time to call your friendly pool service and schedule to get that pool happy and ready for some action. Time to head to Walgreens to stock up on sunscreen, get out the floaty toys and stock up the refrigerator with cold beverages.  Relaxing weekends around the pool now become the motivation to work hard all week.

 Once the pool is open and with the kids out of school soon, those ever-popular, much-needed summer vacations also begin to take shape.  Going to visit family in another part of the country, taking in the sites of another city or just finding a beach and a good book, can be just the cure to the “winter is finally over” blues.  Our professional cab drivers often play a key role in helping to get these summer vacations off to a good start by providing prompt, convenient airport transportation for your family.  But last summer, our driver, James, got much more than he anticipated as he was picking up a family in Chesterfield going to Lambert.

With the bags all packed, all the kids ready to go, James’ passengers were eagerly waiting when he showed up take them to the airport.  He could hear them all doing a mental checklist of everything they needed for their trip and making sure they didn’t forget anything.  With the house all secure, they headed towards Lambert with a sigh of relief that their vacation was about to begin.  But then it happened – That moment like this….

A few minutes prior to arriving  at the airport, the dad remembered that he had left the water running in their pool!  Picturing returning to a floating house and neighbors that didn’t appreciate living in a flood zone, he just didn’t know what to do.  James jumped right in with the perfect solution.  He assured the family that once they were safely dropped off at the airport, he would return back to their home and turn off the water and he would do it free of charge – just because it was the right thing to do.  Jame’s should have been wearing a Superman Cape that day because his passengers truly felt like he saved their vacation from certain disaster.  As James dropped off the family to begin their vacation, they sighed a sense of relief and vowed to count on County Cab for their airport transportation needs from now on.  Not sure that James can do this – but he saved the day for sure.

Winter Road Safety Tips You Need to Stay Cool

In true St. Louis tradition, we experienced seasons as unpredictable as ever, especially throughout the last few months. Much of fall felt like spring, and several days in December felt like fall.

When it doesn’t feel like winter, we are more likely to overlook winter road safety preparations. In addition to the regularly surprising weather conditions, our high population of drivers makes road safety a crucial responsibility. We’ve gathered some tips from sources including the National Safety Council and Consumer Reports and as well as some of our own that will help ease the stress of winter road navigation.

  1. Understand your vehicle’s safety features & get them inspected.

It is crucial to not only make sure your vehicle’s safety features are working, but also to understand their mechanics. The National Safety Council lists the most important safety systems for winter driving:

  • Ignition
  • Brakes
  • Wiring
  • Hoses and fan belts
  • Spark plugs
  • Air, fuel and emissions filters, and PCV valve
  • Distributor
  • Battery
  • Tire wear and air pressure
  • Antifreeze level and freeze line
  1. Take advantage of real-time ways to keep up with weather conditions.

Weather is not static. The conditions before you get behind the wheel can change-fast. Apps are one of the most common, user-friendly ways to track weather conditions. The Missouri Department of Transportation offers a Traveler Information Map App, a map that monitors changing road conditions like snow levels, and whether or not a road is opened or closed. Remember to keep your eyes on the road, though, instead of your phone.

  1. Work on your slide

Skidding across an icy road is one of the most unnerving driving experiences, but did you know that, with proper technique, you can minimize sliding? As per Consumer Reports, the safest way to slide, is to “steer into it.” First, you should gently decelerate. Then “turn steering the wheel in the direction that the car is sliding.” This will straighten out the car, improve your tires’ grip, and decrease risking an accident.

Your Car’s BEST Safety Feature

Remember that, despite the risks of winter driving, there is one reason to minimize fear or frustration. The National Safety Council puts it best:”You are your car’s best safety feature.” The proper preparations will help you take charge of your own safety, even in high-stress situations. Stay knowledgeable, practice safe, patient driving, and you can gain peace of mind on the road.

Across the country, people refer to March 14th as Pi Day, but it’s better known as 314 Day in St. Louis! Since 314 is our area code, it only makes sense that we celebrate our wonderful city. Admittedly, this year is going to be a little lackluster in comparison to years past because we are one year into a pandemic. However, that won’t stop local restaurants from dishing out the best food St. Louis has to offer! Take a look at some of the ways you can satisfy your hunger for St. Louis pride.

Let’s Eat!

St. Louis has its own unique culture of cuisine. We all know that the waffle cone was invented here at the 1904 World’s Fair, but here are some other meals you might want to make on 314 Day:

St. Louis Style Pizza

You thought you knew pizza, but you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen St. Louis style pizza! Thin crust pizza topped with Provel cheese – yes, that’s Provel cheese, which is a mix of cheddar, swiss, and provolone. You can find this in a number of popular STL pizza joints including the ever popular IMO’s.

Toasted Ravioli

Toasted ravs are everything! St. Louis takes ravioli up a notch by breading and frying the meaty pasta and serving it with a side of marinara sauce.

Pork Steaks

Why do other parts of the country give this delicacy a dumb name like “Boston Butt?” Pork steaks are thin cut (but the best are on the thicker side) pork shoulder that are a staple of every St. Louis BBQ. You know we’re a cut above!

Slinger

If you had one too many Buds the night before, the Slinger will be calling your name in the morning! Get a plate of cheese, breakfast potatoes, eggs, and meat (usually sausage, hamburger, bacon, or ham) under a pile of chili. Always served with either toast or hash browns!

St. Paul Sandwich

If you often find yourself torn between Chinese and a sandwich shop, then do we have the combo for you! The St. Paul Sandwich consists of an egg foo yong patty with mayo and LTP on white bread. Look out for variations that include gravy, chicken, beef, or shrimp!

Frozen Custard

No, it’s NOT ice cream! It’s frozen custard! The smooth, creamy frozen treat is always in demand in STL. The real question is: sundae or concrete? The real answer is: BOTH!

There are a million variations on the flavors, and you might even see gooey butter cake make an appearance in other desserts like milkshakes!

Their Facebook page described this taco as “a Parmesan-crusted crispy corn tortilla with an Italian-seasoned meat filling, Mom’s marinara sauce, shredded Provel cheese and topped with parsley and Parmesan cheese.” And, yes, THIS is going to be $3.14 and only available on March 14th!

Hi-Pointe Drive-In – St. Lunatic Burger

It’s baaaaack! Sprint over to Hi-Pointe Drive-In for your chance to get a St. Lunatic Burger! Okay, so they take a burger, right? Of course, it’s a Provel cheese burger. But then, this burger is also topped with a pork steak, toasted ravs, and sprinkled with Red Hot Riplets. THEN, instead of a bun, the burger is sandwiched between two slices of St. Louis style pizza. This is the best thing to be built in St. Louis since The Arch!

Summer in St. Louis

Things are finally getting back to…um, “normal?” Thanks to the vaccine rollout, St. Louis is starting to open back up. Obviously, this summer is not going to look like the summer of, say, 2019, but it also won’t look like the summer of 2020. Finally, we can take the time to start enjoying this awesome city again! Summertime means baseball, river rides, and awesome parks — among everything else St. Louis has to offer! Take a look at some of the summer activities taking place this season.

Adventure & Sports

Do you have a lot of energy after being cooped up for a year and a half? You’re in luck! There are so many adventures you can go on in the St. Louis area. Stadiums are opening up again at higher capacities, meaning we can finally watch the Cardinals in action!

Missouri is quite beautiful! For a while, parks were the only socially-distanced activity around. That’s still super fun, but there is more variety now. Go wild at the zoo or maybe go shopping at a local farmer’s market.

STL loves sports! Whether we’re bleeding blue or going to baseball heaven, St. Louis adores their major league sports. However, we are also home to a number of minor league sports teams, too. For obvious reasons, most of these teams have not had the chance to play in at least a year. Now that they’re announcing their return, it’s time to support your local teams!

Meet Our Minor League Sports Teams

Cheer on your local minor league teams to fill in the gaps for the major league sports we’re lacking. There’s a sense of community that comes with following a minor league team that just can’t be beat!

St. Louis Ambush – Major Arena Soccer League

Arena soccer has several key differences from outdoor soccer (aside from the obvious indoor/outdoor aspect). For instance, players can use the walls for rebounds, passes, and crosses. An experience like indoor soccer is exhilarating and action-packed! This November, you can cheer on the St. Louis Ambush at the Family Arena once again!

Gateway Grizzlies – Minor League Baseball

Even though you’d have to cross the river to get to the stadium, the Gateway Grizzlies are only 15 minutes from the Cardinals! If you’re looking for a different kind of ballpark experience, go check out a minor league team. You usually get to sit closer to the field for a way more affordable price. Minor league baseball is a great family environment because they typically aren’t as crowded and provide amenities for children like the Kid’s Zone. The Grizzlies also have a lot of fun theme nights as well! Here’s the thing, though: you have to at least go for the food. The Grizzlies’ ballpark is home to “Baseball’s Best Burger.” That’s not conjecture, that’s the burger’s name! It’s a bacon cheeseburger sandwiched between a Krispe Kreme donut! So bring your appetite and the whole family to a minor league baseball game!

St. Louis Surge – Global Women’s Basketball Association

We have been without an NBA team for decades in St. Louis, but we are currently home to a GWBA team! The St. Louis Surge is a women’s basketball team that calls Mabee Gymnasium at Fontbonne University its home court. Bring basketball back to the community by supporting your local teams. The 2021 season is about to wrap up, but there’s still time to support them!

St. Louis Slam – Women’s Football Alliance

The NFL is kind of a touchy subject in STL since, well…the move. We’re still pretty upset. However, the WFA is here to give you your football fix — and during the off-season! With a season going from April – July, St. Louis Slam gives you the opportunity to watch football almost year-round. Check out our four-time WFA National Champs in action when they return next year!

St. Louis is attracting more sports teams. Unfortunately, the pandemic halted a lot of progress in getting these teams to St. Louis. That being said, 2023 promises to be the boom in sports that St. Louis deserves!

St. Louis CITY SC – Major League Soccer

Local soccer fans couldn’t be happier to see St. Louis finally joining the MLS! You might have seen the construction downtown from highway 64 (40). The stadium is expected to be completed next year, and the St. Louis CITY SC will officially debut in 2023. Soccer will be in STL before we know it!

Battlehawks – XFL

Okay, so the Battlehawks were JUST here, but their 2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic. St. Louis was so close to having another season of football in The Dome, but we only had 2 games to enjoy before parting ways once more. Not all hope is lost, though, because the XFL is scheduled to return in 2023, and the Battlehawks will most-likely find their battle nest back in St. Louis!
